LEARNING GOALS
- Understand the physics behind plate movement and the significance of convection currents
- Pull together continental drift and seafloor spreading into one theory
- Determine the speed and direction in which continents move
- Discuss the effects of plate tectonics – mountain building, rift valleys, landforms, earthquakes, and volcanoes
- Predict when Earth will have another supercontinent

Video - Plate Tectonics
Here are a few diagrams to give you an idea of the different aspects of plate tectonics. When you click on them they will appear larger and in a new window.

What is the Theory of Plate Tectonics?
After the scientific world accepted the evidence showing the link between continental drift and seafloor spreading, a man by the name of J. Tuzo Wilson put both ideas into a single theory called PLATE TECTONICS
- the idea that Earth's lithosphere is divided into approximately 20 plates
- these plates move around, very slowly, in relation to one another due to processes inside Earth
- the movement of plates leads to mountain building, landform creation, earthquakes, and volcanoes
